|Working with YWAM in Newcastle, Steve oversees a team of 6-8 individuals full-time that run a ministry their YWAM base started called Youth Street. The idea was to create a precinct in downtown Newcastle that was all about young people so they could minister to and equip this generation to impact the world around them. They want to emphasize to the youth that they can find God and find Him where they’re at. The ministry runs a cafe, has camps, big events, and youth church services. But the biggest thing they do is a Saturday program called Youthstreet Teams that caters to kids involved with surfing, skating, sports, art, music and dance. Young people from around the city gather into teams based on their particular interests. The program not only aims to provide a fun, affordable afternoon, but more importantly it aims to connect with young people beyond the surface. Each week the teams are run based upon prescheduled activities with an emphasis on values and biblical principles. As the young people connect with the staff and learn these values they begin to see a chain reaction that occurs that points them to God and an opportunity to know Him in their lives. Their ministry is completely full of unchurched kids who conventionally would never sit in a church service or go to any “religious” event. But week after week they are seeing real fruit out of what God has given them to do and seeing young peoples’ lives changed. The success of the program has encouraged other YWAM bases in Australia and overseas to begin their own Youth Street ministry.|
