God’s Guidance Through A Perplexing World

Preacher:
Passage: Psalms 23:3

Audio of Sermon (MP3)

Psalm 23:1-3 (NASB)

1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want.

2 He makes me lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside quiet waters.
3 He restores my soul;
He guides me in the paths of righteousness
For His name's sake.

God’s Guidance Through A Perplexing World

Matthew 5:6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”

1. We will never find satisfaction when our main goal is to please ourselves.
2. We will never find satisfaction when we look for it in the wrong places.

Jeremiah 2:13 "My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken Me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water."

Hebrews 12:25

Amos 2:7  "The people of the world pant after the dust of the earth."

Matthew 5:6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”

The words in the Greek for “hungering and thirsting” are interesting. Jesus is literally saying:

6 “Blessed are those who keep hungering and keep thirsting after righteousness!"
It is not a one-time event, but a continuous action on our part. Ours is to be an ever increasing hunger for God and His righteousness.

Psalm 34:8 “O taste and see that the LORD is good. Blessed is the man who puts his trust in Him.”

3 He guides me in the paths of righteousness
This just means the right path. He keeps me “on track” in other words. He helps me make the right decisions in life.

Proverbs 3:15-16 (NIV) “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6  in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

Isaiah 53:6 "All we like sheep have gone astray. Each of us has turned to his own way."

Proverbs 14:12 "There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.”

“A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23” Phillip Keller, “There is something almost terrifying about the destructive self-determination of a human being. It is relentlessly interlocked with personal pride and self-assertion. We insist we know what is best for us even though the disastrous results may be self-evident. Just as sheep will blindly, habitually, stupidly follow one another along the same little trails that become ruts that erode into gigantic gullies, so we humans cling to the same habits that we have seen ruin many other lives.”
Proverbs 3:15-16 (NIV) “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6  in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

Proverbs 6:22 “When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you.”

Proverbs 12:15: “The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.”

Proverbs 20:18 “Make plans by seeking advice; if you wage war, obtain guidance.”

“God whispers to us in our pleasure, but He shouts to us in our pain.” C.S. Lewis

Psalm 119: 66-67 “Teach me knowledge and good judgment, for I trust Your commands. 67 Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey Your word."

Proverbs 4:18 "The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining brighter till the full light of day."
