Rest > Stressed

Passage: Psalms 23:2

Audio of Sermon (MP3)

Psalm 23:1-6

Outer Stability Comes from Inner Tranquility

Some of us are so busy we are not enjoying life the way God wants us to, and we’re definitely not getting the rest and relaxation and recreation that God desires for us to have in our lives.

Psalm 127:2 "It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones." (NLT)

Psalm 23:2 "He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.

Psalm 23:2 "He lets me rest in fields of green grass and leads me to quiet pools of fresh water." (TEV)

Rest > Stressed
1. You Need Rest
Ecclesiastes 10:10 "Using a dull ax requires great strength, so sharpen the blade. That’s the value of wisdom; it helps you succeed." (NLT)
Matthew 11:28 “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest." (NLT)
2. You Need Food and Water
Psalm 23:2 "You have bedded me down in lush meadows, you find me quiet pools to drink from." (The Message)
1Corinthians 10:31 "So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." (NLT)
Jeremiah 15:16 "When I discovered your words, I devoured them. They are my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies." (NLT)
“God is willing to do the impossible but first you must be willing to do what is possible” (unknown)
He wants us to look to Him because He also provides Living Water!
John 7:37-38 “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’” (NLT)
Jeremiah 2:13 “For my people have done two evil things: They have abandoned me — the fountain of living water. And they have dug for themselves cracked cisterns that can hold no water at all!" (NLT)
3. God is Preparing You
You are Going Somewhere! – that’s why God is preparing you!
God not only knows our current need, but he knows our coming need!
4. The Good Shepherd MAKES Rest and Replenishment Possible!
Psalm 23:2 "He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters." (NKJV)
Four things must be taken care of before a sheep is willing to lie down!
1. Free from hunger
2. Cannot be frightened in any way
3. They have to be free from bugs
4. A sheep will not sleep if they’re dealing with friction with other sheep
Turns out sheep are a bit like people -- if there’s conflict or issues, posturing, rivalries, tension they won’t sleep. Could it be that if we’re not sleeping, we’re thinking about people, who we’re mad at, who've lied about us, who we feel guilty around because we fail too, who we’re insecure around, who we’re jealous of or threatened by?
All the while our Shepherd is saying, "Quiet down your heart and soul and think on Me. Get over those things and rest in me. I will give you peace and I will make things right."
With all the busyness that life can bring, not to mention the friction that people can cause, what we need to do is to drink in the living water and to feast on His word and to keep our eyes on the Savior and relax in His presence, because…
Great things happen when sheep go to sleep!
Whom the Son has set free is free indeed! (John 8:36)
